4 Common Household Molds

4 Common Household Molds

Share:

Household molds are a constant battle for a lot of homeowners. This type of fungus tends to grow where there is plenty of moisture, such as the laundry room, mudroom, or bathroom. While many types of mold cause significant damage to walls and floors, many species can also cause health issues. The team at TLC Home Inspections specializes in mold inspections and can identify any of these common types of household molds.

4 Common Household Molds

1. Chaetomium

Cheatomium is a brownish or reddish mold that produces a distinct, musty odor. Commonly found growing on walls, carpets, frames, or wallpapers, Chaetomium is also known to cause skin irritations and nailbed infections. In rare cases, this type of mold causes cerebral and systematic infections in immunocompromised individuals.

2. Aspergillus

Aspergillus is one of the most common household molds and causes a variety of respiratory disorders or infections. Contact with this species of fungus can also lead to ear and eye infections or Aspergillus sinusitis. It usually floats through the air in the home and is circulated through the HVAC system.

3. Cladosporium

Cladosporium grows in fabrics like carpets, and wood surfaces such as floorboards and cabinets. It’s usually black, brown, or green, and can trigger allergies in those with seasonal symptoms.

4. Stachybotrys Chartarum

Commonly known as black mold, this species of household mold is extremely toxic for pets and humans. It usually grows in basements or in homes that have sustained severe water damage. Black mold causes chronic sinus infections, breathing problems, headaches, and persistent coughs.
